Medicare is a federal health insurance program designed for individuals aged 65 or older, and for certain younger people with qualifying disabilities such as End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Medicare is divided into several parts, each focusing on different healthcare needs. Medicare Part A covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility stays, hospice care, and some home health services. Medicare Part B includes outpatient care, doctor visits, preventive services, and medical supplies. Medicare Part D provides coverage for prescription drugs, including many commonly used medications and recommended vaccines. Together, these parts offer comprehensive protection to help manage medical expenses in later life.
Medicare Part A helps cover the cost of inpatient hospital stays and certain types of care you might need during a hospital stay or immediately after discharge. This includes:
Inpatient Hospital Stays: Coverage for hospital room and board, including the services you receive during your stay, such as nursing care, meals, and medications.
Skilled Nursing Facility Care: Covers care that requires skilled nursing or therapy services in a facility after a hospital stay (but only for a limited time and under certain conditions).
Hospice Care: Provides comfort and support services for individuals with terminal illnesses. This care includes medical, nursing, and social services to manage pain and support quality of life.
Home Health Care: Helps with limited home health services, such as physical therapy or skilled nursing care, if your doctor determines you need it after a hospital stay.
Medicare Part B covers essential outpatient services that are necessary for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of various medical conditions. This includes:
Doctor Visits: Coverage for visits to your doctor, whether it's for routine checkups, urgent care, or specialized treatments.
Outpatient Services: Includes medical care that does not require an overnight stay in a hospital, such as blood tests, X-rays, and other diagnostic services.
Medical Supplies: Covers medically necessary items, like wheelchairs, blood sugar testing strips, and some prosthetics.
Preventive Services: Part B helps pay for preventive services, such as flu shots, cancer screenings, and wellness exams, all aimed at early detection and disease prevention.
Medicare Part D provides coverage for prescription drugs, helping beneficiaries manage the costs of medications. This includes:
Prescription Medications: Part D helps cover the cost of a variety of prescription drugs, including those for chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and asthma.
Vaccines and Immunizations: It also helps cover vaccines and shots, such as the flu vaccine, shingles vaccine, and others that are necessary to protect your health.
Part D Plans: Part D is offered through private insurance companies, which may offer different coverage options, formularies (lists of covered drugs), and pricing structures.
Part C of Medicare is known as Medicare Advantage Health plans are offered by private insurance companies like LA Care, SCAN, Humana, United HealthCare, Anthem, and Blue Shield. These plans combine the benefits of Medicare Parts A, B, and usually D — often with lower out-of-pocket costs and some added benefits like dental, vision, hearing aids, transportation Over The Counter Product (ORC), or gym memberships.
Some Medicare Advantage health plans will give you a debit card that can be used to pay for food, utilities, or gas for your car. You can not use This card to buy alcohol or withdraw money from the bank teller or ATM machine. The dollar amount will depend on the Medicare Advantage plan that you sign up for.
